In October 1995, shortly after Stan Ternent had been appointed Bury manager, his side lost 2-0 at home to Scarborough and were slumped in 21st place in the fourth tier of English football.

Within two years, Stan’s team had achieved a double promotion to the division below the Premier League and was competing in the same league as Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and many others who either had or went on to have sustained spells in the top flight. They didn’t just compete with them; they were beating them too.

This is the story of how Ternent and his side of heroes took Bury to their highest level since 1969 and how, in the words of the man himself, it’s not about the size of the dog; it’s the fight that’s in it that counts.
